What Are the Perfect Dimensions for a French Return Curtain Rod?

A French return curtain rod looks simple, but a few inches can completely change how the curtains sit around the window.
The right dimensions come down to three things: rod width, wall projection, and curtain weight.
Here’s how to choose them without overcomplicating it.
1. Start With the Window Width

Measure the full width of the window, including the frame or trim.
Then add enough space on each side for the curtains to sit when open. Around 3–6 inches per side is a useful starting point, but it isn't a fixed rule. Full or heavy curtains may need more room.
For a 60-inch window, adding 5 inches on each side gives:
60" + 5" + 5" = 70" rod
That extra width isn't just decorative. It keeps more of the glass visible when the curtains are open.
One mistake we often see: measuring the window perfectly, but forgetting to leave room for the curtain itself.
2. Check the Projection From the Wall

Projection is simply how far the rod sits away from the wall.
For many installations, around 3–4 inches can work well. But the correct measurement depends on what's behind the curtain.
Look for anything that projects from the wall:

Blinds or shades

Handles
If a blind extends 2 inches from the wall, for example, the rod needs enough additional clearance for the curtain to fall naturally in front of it.
This is one measurement worth checking twice. A rod can have the perfect width and still feel wrong if the curtain constantly brushes against the blind or window trim.
3. Think About Curtain Weight Before Choosing the Diameter
A thin rod can look elegant, but diameter isn't only a design decision.
Lightweight linen on a small window and heavy lined drapery across a wide opening put very different demands on the hardware.
As the span and curtain weight increase, a larger rod diameter may be more appropriate.

For a long span, we usually prefer choosing the right diameter from the beginning rather than trying to compensate for an undersized rod later.
4. Does the Rod Need a Center Support?

Longer rods may require additional support.
There isn't one universal length at which every French return rod needs a center bracket. It depends on the span, diameter, and curtain weight.
Very long custom rods may also be made in multiple sections, with support placed where the sections connect.
There's another detail that's easy to miss: with a conventional center bracket, curtain rings generally can't travel through the support.
So before adding one, think about how the curtains will actually open. We sometimes receive measurements that work perfectly on paper, only to discover that the client wants one curtain panel to travel across the entire rod. That changes the support configuration.
5. Leave Enough Room for the Curtains to Stack
When curtains are open, the folded fabric takes up space beside the window. This is called stack-back.
The fuller and heavier the curtains, the more space they generally need.
That's why two identical 60-inch windows don't necessarily need the same rod width. Lightweight linen panels may take up relatively little room, while full lined curtains can require considerably more space at each side.
If maximizing natural light is important, don't size the rod from the window alone. Think about where the fabric will sit when it's open.
6. How High Should a French Return Rod Be?
One of the most common questions we get is: "How high above the window should I place my brackets?"
General Rule:
Mount your brackets 4–6 inches above the top of the window frame for most setups.
For Specific Looks:

For a dramatic effect: Go higher — 8–12 inches above the frame works beautifully with floor-length drapes.

For standard windows: Stay within the 4–6 inch range.

For low ceilings: Position the rod just 1–2 inches below the ceiling to draw the eye upward.

Putting the Measurements Together
Let's take one typical window:
Window width: 60"
Extra space: 5" per side
Blind depth: 2"
Curtains: Medium-weight, floor-length
Start with the width:
60" + 5" + 5" = 70"
So the target finished width is approximately 70 inches.
Next, check the blind. Because it projects 2 inches from the wall, the French return needs enough additional projection for the curtain to hang freely in front of it.
Finally, choose the rod diameter and support configuration based on the 70-inch span and curtain weight.
Those three decisions—width, projection, support—will tell you far more than the window width alone.

If there's one measurement worth checking again, it's projection.
Width is usually straightforward. Clearance is where small details—deep molding, a Roman shade, a handle that sticks out further than expected—can create problems after installation.
Take one photo of the window from the front and another from the side. Measure the overall width and the deepest obstruction from the wall.
