Brass Patina Guide
The Beauty of Unlacquered Brass
Patina: What to Expect
One of the most distinctive qualities of solid unlacquered brass is its ability to develop a natural patina over time. This living finish is highly valued for its warm, aged character and timeless appeal.
Unlike lacquered brass, which remains unchanged, unlacquered brass is designed to evolve.
When newly polished, brass has a soft golden tone. In certain lighting, it may even reflect a subtle silvery glow. However, with regular handling and exposure to air and moisture, the surface begins to transform.

How Patina Develops
As your brass curtain rods, brass hooks, knobs, or hardware are touched and used daily, natural oils from the hands and environmental humidity interact with the metal.
This process gradually deepens the color, shifting from light gold to richer bronze and honeyed tones. Each piece develops its own unique character, creating a refined, lived-in look that designers and homeowners appreciate for its authenticity.
Subtle variations between pieces are normal and part of genuine craftsmanship. Over time, finishes often balance and soften naturally.
Maintaining or Restoring Shine
If you prefer the original polished appearance, the shine of unlacquered brass can be restored using a high-quality brass polish. Please note that polishing removes the patina and restarts the natural aging process.
For gentle cleaning without altering the patina:
-
Use mild soap and warm water
-
Wipe with a soft microfiber cloth
-
Dry thoroughly
Avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive pads, or bleach.
